Best Wishes During This Holiday Season

It's almost time for winter break! Which means I need to start wrapping presents to put under the tree and I need to finish my projects that are due after winter break so I can relax during my vacation. I have completed the first phase of three new projects for my concentration. They are now all ready to be fired!

Trouble is, AMY KEEPS FORGETTING.

But it's ok. I'm not worried that I won't get them done. Maybe not when they're "due," but if I use my time wisely and my nicest manners, I can get them fired over winter break by coming in a couple of times. I know there has to be at least one day that I'm bored to death.

Our final Secret Santa (shhhh...) is this friday and I'm really excited, but I'm really going to miss it. The first week I had Julia and I got her some fancy M&Ms. The second week I had Ryland and I got him a pencil sharpener shaped like a nose. This week I have ................. and I am getting them........................ :)

I got some great stuff too! The first week Haley gave me a bag of my favorite cookies and last week Tolley got me a bunch of incense FROM INDIA! Thanks guys!

New Years is also over Winter Break. It's a time for reflection and I plan to do just that. I am enjoying my final days of AP3D during 2009 and looking forward to 2010. GRADUATION! Oh my gosh. Excited for that, but sad that my Lakeridge experience is coming to an end. I have been blessed with some great classes, great teachers, and the best friends.

So Best Wishes During This Holiday Season and A Happy New Year from me!

Concentration

So last year I read the poem Thanatopsis by William Cullen Bryant. Thanatos is the greek word for "death," while the suffix "-opsis" means sight. So I started thinking of death and what happens after death. The main thing I always think of is reincarnation, so I started thinking of what things could be reincarnated to and I mostly thought of nature. But then I started wondering what would happen if I abstracted the human form and combined it with a common theme or object.

So, that is my concentration! ABSTRACTED HUMAN FORM COMBINED WITH A COMMON THEME OR OBJECT. So far, I have only finished two...I named them "Mr. and Mrs. Brave New World" because they remind me of that novel by Aldous Huxley.
I have made two more and I am in the process of producing a couple more. These figures are probably my favorite piece I've ever done in the four years I've done ceramics!
P.S. I'm excited for our first secret santa gift exchange tomorrow. I wonder who drew my name...too bad I won't find out until the last class before winter break. I hope that I got something that my person will like, I wasn't sure what to get them. :-)

Damaged

So I decided to base my project off of this picture that I ended up not putting on my blog, but that I thoroughly like much better. I decided to go with that picture and I hope that my project turns out ok. I'm afraid it's going to be too pretty. Fingers crossed it isn't!

New Project???

Hey Everyone:
I am creating a piece based on my "Magnified" A-Z photo from our field trip. Trouble is I am having artist's block and I can't really think of any new ideas. It would mean a lot to me if you check out the picture from my post and gave me your thoughts of it.

OCAC

The other day Oregon College of Art and Craft came and gave a presentation to our class. It sounded like a really great college. I like the fact that it is a smaller school with a student to teacher ratio of 9 to 1. Devon (the admissions director) seemed like a really nice person and even let some of the people in the class show her their portfolios. It seems like a really great school and if I was looking to go to a visual arts college I would definitely apply there.

AP3D Art Retreat

Hey:

Super fun time at the Art Retreat. We stayed in "the barn" which was really cool. Once we got there we immediately went off in exploration. A small group of people and I tried to find the river, and failed miserably. But we got a really fun hike out of it. Once we got back and learned a little bit about the history of Menucha we took a tour of the grounds with Amy.

We probably spent the most amount of time in the orchard which had the best apples I have ever eaten. I'm a little short though, so I had to find other ways to get to them. Haley helped me out with this. Once we got back we heated up the enchilada casserole that my mom made (my favorite food) and waited until Jacob Tietzie, our guest artist, got there. Once everything was all set up he started explaining how to make molds. It seemed like a really complicated and long process...and it was. But now that I know how to it seems really easy. Since we spent all that time in the orchard I thought it was only fitting to make a mold of a pear. It was a little frustrating but after the plaster was mixed and poured I felt very accomplished.

After going inside to warm up we spent a great amount of time hanging out and eating. You could say we bonded. That night we worked on our assemblages. That was fun. We took a bunch of different objects and assembled them so that they all worked together to make one piece. Everyone had some really cool things put together. I thought that project was really fun. Most people stayed up late, but I went to bed early because I was really tired from the busy day we had, and I wanted to make sure I was well rested for our final day of art adventure.

The next morning Amy made us a delicious breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs, and fried potatoes. Jacob came back to help us finish our molds and to teach us how to use clay with the mold. It got really cold outside, so we moved all the furniture, set down tarps, and worked inside. When working outside you have all of the sounds of nature surrounding you, while working inside you have the sounds of Godzilla attacking a city behind you. The vote was between watching Godzilla, or Charlie and the Chocolate Factory...obviously Godzilla won.

We all said goodbye to Jacob and ate lunch, which consisted of everything that we hadn't already eaten. We then started work on our Andy Goldsworthy projects. After working on mine for a little while I decided to see what everyone else was creating. A lot of people had really great pieces. Olivia found a hole in a tree and filled it with twigs in a circular form. Tolley made an archway from branches of trees. Anna took apples from the ground, put them on a stick, and put them over by these pretty flowers. She did about six of them and they looked really cool. Then Ilya and Jackson found the flattened stones and made two leaning towers and a piece that was right next to a cliff like drop. After seeing everyone else's I went back to finish mine and found out that the wind had practically destroyed it! I tried to fix it the best I could and I think it turned out pretty good, but I liked it before the wind moved all my leaves.

After packing up our bags and taking one last tour of the grounds so that we could see everyone's artwork we hit the road back to Lakeridge. It was an extremely fun weekend and we all agreed that we definitely want to do another retreat together. Can't wait til then.
